Another West Region Newcomer in USA Lacrosse Regional Boys' Top 10 Rankings

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 28.

It’s an extremely rare week for the Northeast Region. It was perfect. There was no movement in the region on account of every top 10 team winning. There were tests for several of the teams. No. 1 Brunswick (Conn.) had to rally but ended up with a big win. No. 5 Belmont Hill (Mass.) and No. 9 Fairfield Prep (Conn.) each won by a goal.

Lawrenceville (N.J.) retained the top spot in the Mid-Atlantic Region after getting by Salesianum (Del.) in overtime. The game, although a loss, proved beneficial to Salesianum, which hadn’t faced quite that caliber of opponent yet. Hanging with the Big Red showed that the Sals are indeed a very good team this year, and it bumped them up to No. 3 in the region. McDonogh (Md.) was the other big mover and shaker. The Eagles have rebounded from a pair of midseason losses and proved they’re playing as well as anyone by handing Boys’ Latin (Md.) their first loss in MIAA play.

The South Region has one small change. Highland Park (Texas) dropped a narrow in-state decision to fall one spot. The remainder of the top 10 teams continued to roll, with many of the Florida teams advancing deeper into the playoffs. Both of the top-ranked teams, St. Andrews (Fla.) and Lake Mary (Fla.), are playing in their regional semifinals.

The Midwest Region kept most of its teams in order on the strength of unbeaten weeks. St. Xavier (Ohio) won a head-to-head top-10 matchup with Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) to reinforce its No. 5 ranking. Bloomington Jefferson (Minn.) topped a top-three in-state finisher from a year ago to vault into the rankings. They have the lone perfect record of the top 10.

The West Region has another newcomer. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.) rides an eight-game winning streak into the 10th spot. They’ve only lost to a Maryland team and to one in-state team while picking up several impressive wins as they gear up for playoffs. The postseason is here for many of the California teams, while the top game of the week is Valor Christian (Colo.) vs. Cherry Creek (Colo.) in a top-five showdown.

NORTHEAST

1. Brunswick School (Conn.), 10-0

The Bruins rallied from early deficits of 4-1 and 5-2 to defeat Hill Academy (Ont.), 19-10 with Hudson Hausmann scoring six of Brunswick’s 12 second-half goals to spark the comeback. Brunswick (Conn.) followed that with a 12-6 victory over Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.). Previous: 1

2. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 8-2

Luke Breslin had four goals and one assist, Giovanni Massaro had three goals and one assist, Quinn Langton had two goals and three assists, Jack Riglietti had two goals and two assists and Kyle Bilello added two goals and one assist in a 19-2 victory over Stepinac (N.Y.). Previous: 2

3. St. John’s Prep (Mass.), 8-0

Drew Bossi had a breakout performance with four goals and five assists, Cam McCarthy netted a hat trick and Oliver Rosselli and Ben Merena each had a goal and an assist in a 14-8 win over Billerica (Mass.). The Eagles next meet Boston College HS (Mass.) in a rematch of last year’s state final. Previous: 3

4. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 11-0

Danny Aiello and Ben Morris had three goals and two assists each, Maclin Keyser had two goals and two assists, Mikey Luce had two goals and an assist and Colin Clark added a pair of goals in a 16-3 Rocky Point (N.Y.). Previous: 4

5. Belmont Hill (Mass.), 9-1

James Mullowney made 16 saves, Ben DiBattita had three goals and Preston Evans added one goal and two assists to lead Belmont Hill (Mass.) to an 8-7 win at Roxbury Latin (Mass.). Previous: 5

6. Chaminade (N.Y.), 7-3

The Flyers feasted on visiting opposition from Connecticut, knocking off Darien (Conn.), 11-8, before a 14-3 victory over Wilton (Conn.). Quinn Ball won 20 of 21 faceoffs, John Balsamo had four goals and James Gillis had three goals and three assists against the Warriors. Previous: 6

7. Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.), 11-0

Anthony Raio had seven goals and two assists, James Bruno had five goals and two assists, Zach Marco had four goals and one assist and Joe Filardi added one goal and four assists in a 21-6 win over Commack (N.Y.). Previous: 7

8. Garden City (N.Y.), 10-2

The Trojans made it seven consecutive wins with an 11-6 win over Pleasantville (N.Y.). Charlie Koester had four goals, Ben Smith had two goals and one assist, Brayden Robertiello had a pair of assists and Denis Fargione made seven saves for Garden City (N.Y.). Previous: 8

9. Fairfield Prep (Conn.), 9-1

Tim Shannehan had two goals and three assists, scoring the only goal of the fourth quarter with 4:17 left in regulation, Luke Shannehan and Emmett Crotty had one goal and one assist each, Garrett Keane made five saves as Fairfield Prep (Conn.) shut out New Canaan (Conn.) in the second half en route to an 8-7 victory. Previous: 9

10. East Islip (N.Y.), 10-1

Matt Baldino and Sean Hannigan had two goals and four assists apiece, Matt Ferraro netted a hat trick, Jack Kalinowski had two goals and one assist and Matt McIntee added one goal and two assists in a 14-8 win over Islip (N.Y.). Previous: 10

MID-ATLANTIC

1. Lawrenceville (N.J.), 13-1

Lawrenceville scored with 10 seconds left in overtime for a 9-8 win at Salesianum (Del.). The Big Red had an 8-7 lead before the game was tied up. Lawrenceville started the week by handing Hun School (N.J.) an 18-7 loss on April 23. The Big Red host Deerfield Academy (Mass.) and Hill Academy (Ont.) this week. Previous: 1

2. Haverford (Pa.), 14-0

The Fords overwhelmed Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 13-2 behind a balanced effort that saw nine different players score goals. Conor Morsel led the way with a hat trick and assist, Evan Large and Brady O’Kane scored twice and assisted once apiece. Aydan DiRocco and Max Fertels each scored once and assisted a goal each. Brody Murphy made 11 saves before giving way to Colin Decker who stopped a pair of shots. The Fords finished another perfect week with a 10-4 win over Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 26. Previous: 2

3. Salesianum (Del.), 10-1

In their only game of the week, the Sals lost in overtime, 9-8, to Lawrenceville on April 26. Salesianum trailed 8-7 before a goal with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and had a possession in overtime thwarted before the game-winner. It’s another challenging week with IMG National (Fla.) and Malvern facing them this week. Previous: 6

4. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 13-2

The Friars more than doubled Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) 17-8. Michael Ortlieb scored a hat trick and assisted on two goals, Danny Lucovich scored four goals, Hagen McTear had a hat trick, Ennis Udo had two goals and two assists, and Jake Bickel scored twice and assisted two goals. Malvern scored a 13-2 win over Episcopal (Pa.) with McTear scoring three goals and assisting on two more. Logan Turley scored a pair of goals and assisted three others. Nick Wehmeyer had eight faceoff wins. The Friars closed the week with a 13-6 win over Academy of New Church (Pa.). Owen Mears registered a hat trick with an assist, Udo also had three goals and Ortlieb scored once and assisted on three goals. Previous: 3

5. McDonogh (Md.), 10-3

The Eagles picked up a huge MIAA win when they handed Boys’ Latin (Md.) their first league loss, 12-10. McDonogh came out strong and held off Boys’ Latin whenever they were threatened. Luke Miller and Bogue Hahn each had hat tricks, Brendan Millon scored twice and assisted on two other goals, and Hunter Metz and Ben Firlie scored twice apiece and Firlie added an assist. Ciaran Sweeney competed well at the faceoff X, and Aidan Seibert made seven saves in net. Miller had six points on four goals and two assists, Blake Resnick had a hat trick, Hahn scored two goals and had an assist, Metz had three assists and a goal, and Millon scored a goal and provided a pair of assists in a 13-4 win over Mount St. Joseph (Md.). 6. Boys' Latin (Md.), 10-2

Spencer Ford had a hat trick and Matthew Higgins and Laim White each scored twice, but the Lakers fell to McDonogh 12-10. It was Boys’ Latin’s first loss of the MIAA season. They face another key league matchup against Gilman (Md.) on April 30. Previous: 4

7. Calvert Hall (Md.), 9-4

The Cardinals won a pair of MIAA games. The Cardinals opened the week with a 7-6 overtime win at Gilman (Md.). Cody Collier scored the game-winner after Preston Huffman scored with less than two minutes left in regulation to force extra time. The win gave Calvert some separation from Gilman in a battle of teams that had one MIAA loss coming into play. They also defeated St. Paul’s (Md.) 11-8 with Will Schoonmaker, Huffman, Peyton Forte and Jackson Mitchell scoring two goals apiece. Huffman also had a pair of assists. Alex Swartz stopped 12 shots, and Greyson Enrique made two saves when called upon due to a penalty on Swartz. Ben Cuomo won 18 of 22 faceoffs. Mount St. Joseph (Md.) and Archbishop Spalding (Md.) are up this week. Previous: 5

8. Landon (Md.), 14-2

Kevin Miller fired in the game-winner off a pass from Troy Ulisney only 43 seconds into overtime for an 11-10 win over Gonzaga (D.C.) on April 24. Hayden Goozh won the overtime faceoff to key the final opportunity. Landon rallied from a deficit of 7-1, and still trailed 10-7 going into the fourth quarter. Zach Abramson stopped all five shots that he saw in the fourth quarter. Chase Robertson finished with five goals and Anthony Panetti scored three. The win snapped Gonzaga’s nine-game winning streak. Landon defeated St. Alban’s (D.C.) 16-5. The Bears will finish the regular season with a game against Episcopal (Va.) on April 30. Previous: 7

9. Gilman (Md.), 10-4

The Greyhounds were leading Calvert Hall by a goal with less than two minutes to play in regulation, but lost, 7-6, in a key battle for second place in the MIAA. James Meyer scored three times and Jay Rodgers fired in a pair of goals for Gilman. The ‘Hounds pulled away from Loyola Blakefield (Md.) for a 13-10 win to snap their two-game losing streak. Jay Wilkerson had three goals and an assist, and Rodgers had a goal and three assists. Clayton Baddley had a hat trick. Gilman sits tied for fourth in the MIAA with Archbishop Spalding (Md.). 10. La Salle (Pa.), 12-0

The Explorers continue to dominate Philadelphia Catholic League competition. La Salle pounded Bonner-Prendergast (Pa.) 17-1 to start their week. Paul Van Bastelaar had a hat trick and four assists, Will Trymbiski scored twice and had four helpers, Jack Trymbiski scored two goals and had three assists and Mike Van Bastelaar scored twice. Shane Dominello scored four goals and had five assists the lead the way in a 17-1 win over Cardinal O’Hara (Pa.). Paul Van Bastelaar put up a hat trick, Tobi Zweiback had four points on two goals and two assists, Jack Trymbiski scored twice and had an assist and Max Wickersham had a pair of goals. Will Trymbiski scored once and assisted on two other goals. La Salle will face their first test in a while at the end of a four-game week when Radnor (Pa.) visits. Previous: 10

SOUTH

1. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 20-1

The Scots advanced to the regional semifinals last week after defeating Ransom Everglades (Fla.) 26-1. Coach Tony Seaman was able to give much of his roster playoff experience in the win, with 15 different goal scorers. Sophomore Shovan Eriksson had six points in the win. St. Andrew’s faces Oxbridge Academy (Fla.) in the regional semifinal. Previous: 1

2. Lake Mary (Fla.), 20-1

A week after defeating Lake Brantley (Fla.) 24-1 for a district crown, the Rams pitched a shutout against the very same foe, winning the contest 24-0. Nease (Fla.) awaits Lake Mary in the regional semifinal. Previous: 2

3. Charlotte Catholic (N.C.), 20-0

The Cougars concluded a perfect regular season by defeating Northwest Guilford (N.C.) 17-9. Colin Mendicino had six goals while Jack Ransom had a hat trick in the win. Previous: 4

4. Highland Park (Texas), 15-3

The Fighting Scots lost their regular season finale by falling to Episcopal School of Dallas 7-6. The loss marked the first time Highland Park suffered an in-state defeat since the end of the 2022 season. Previous: 3

5. Bolles (Fla.), 19-2

The Bulldogs won their regional quarterfinal over Maclay (Fla.) 20-6. Nolan Preston had a team-leading five goals while Greer Boree won 18 of 21 draws. Bolles will face Episcopal School of Jacksonville (Fla.) for a third time. Bolles won the previous two meetings. Previous: 5

6. Westlake (Texas), 16-1

The Chaparrals’ regular season concluded by scoring 44 goals in two games. Westlake defeated Austin (Texas) 24-12, which was followed by a 20-1 victory against Westwood (Texas). Previous: 6

7. Benjamin (Fla.), 17-1

The Buccaneers had 12 goal scorers in their regional quarterfinal victory over All Saints Academy (Fla.). Jack Kelleher had a three-goal, five-assist effort in the win. Benjamin will seek its third win over St. Edward’s (Fla.) this year. Previous: 7

8. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 14-2

T Owen Lenox’s hat trick helped the Highlanders topple the First Academy (Fla.) 19-1. Lake Highland next faces Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (Fla.). Previous: 8

9. North Paulding (Ga.), 19-0

The Wolfpack’s quest for a perfect season continued with another dominating performance, defeating North Cobb (Ga.) 14-3. Kade McNeil had a team-leading four goals while Xander Thompson and Jack Cornwell had hat tricks. Previous: 9

10. Roswell (Ga.), 18-2

Ezra Moore had back-to-back hat tricks in a pair of Hornets playoff wins last week. Moore scored four times and added three assists in a 24-0 win over Newman (Ga.). Moore then scored three goals in a 16-3 victory over Decatur (Ga.). Ben Weir had a team-leading six tallies in the win over Decatur. Previous: 10

MIDWEST

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 11-2

The Eagles impressed in their lone game of the week, topping Everest Academy (Ont.), 18-10. The Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association Tournament is next, with Culver set to play the first of its two games in Hudson against Kiski Academy (Pa.). The teams last met in early March with the Eagles winning 18-4. Previous: 1

2. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 12-2

The Golden Bears had another impressive week, winning all three of their games, including a 13-4 victory over one of Indiana’s best teams: Hamilton Southeastern. Upper Arlington’s five-game win streak will be put to the test this week by a dangerous Hilliard Davidson team (April 30) followed by Mitten State power Brother Rice (May 4). Previous: 2

3. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.), 14-2

The Hawklets ended up with impromptu time off after their opponent forfeited their lone game of the week. Next up for Rockhurst Jesuit: a May 1 trip to face a solid Olathe East (Kan.) team. Previous: 3

4. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 10-1

The Patriots had a perfect week, scoring 15 goals apiece in wins over Dublin Coffman and Olentangy. Two more games against Olentangy rivals await with Orange (Ohio) on April 30 and Berlin (Ohio) on May 2. Other upcoming tests include Buckeye State giants like Worthington Kilbourne and St. Xavier. Previous: 5

5. St. Xavier (Ohio), 12-2

The Bombers picked up three huge wins, topping two of Michigan’s best, Detroit Catholic Central and Hartland, and one of the Buckeye State’s best, Springboro. In their closest win, 12-11 over the Shamrocks, Magnus Violet dominated the X, going 16 of 20 on faceoffs, while Trent Yelton made 13 saves. Johnnie Guttman had hat tricks against both DCC and Hartland, including three goals and four assists against the Eagles. Previous: 6

6. Brother Rice (Mich.), 9-2

The Warriors picked up a couple of victories by double-digit margins over in-state foes Birmingham United and Cranbrook. Junior Danny Holt was simply dominant at the X, securing 30 of 35 faceoffs against the Bulldogs and 14 of 16 against the Cranes. Previous: 7

7. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 9-2

The Shamrocks split a pair of games against two of Ohio’s top-ranked teams, topping Springboro, 9-5, and falling by a goal to St. Xavier, 12-11. DCC got great play in net in both games with Tyler Lammers making 13 saves against the Bombers and Charles Graves making 14 versus the Panthers. Previous: 8

8. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 8-1

The Celtics had a huge week, handing Olentangy Berlin its first loss (13-9), topping Hudson (12-7) in a rematch of the 2022 state semifinals and doubling up on crosstown rival Dublin Coffman. Davis Pyser sparked Jerome’s attack with 11 goals and six assists on the week, while Will Albright, CJ Infante, Max Michels and Deangelo Nardone led an impressive defensive effort. Previous: 9

9. Trinity Louisville (Ky.), 12-1

The Shamrocks picked up an impressive win, topping one of Missouri’s best teams MICDS, 16-7, Saturday. Trinity’s resume also includes victories over top competition from Indiana (Carmel), Ohio (St. Xavier) and Tennessee (Montgomery Bell Academy). Previous: 10

10. Bloomington Jefferson (Minn.), 6-0

The Jaguars took down last year’s third-place team in Minnesota, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, 9-8, behind a balanced effort. Five players scored, including Kevin Graff’s hat trick and two goals apiece by Mason Van Brunt and Lukas Wammer. Van Brunt also finished with seven ground balls, just behind Owen Baker’s 10, while Bennett Lindman made 12 saves. Previous: NR

WEST

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 14-2

The Wildcats remain No. 1, polishing off the regular season with a 21-7 victory over Marin Academy (Calif.). Playoffs are on deck. Previous: 1

2. Valor Christian (Colo.), 11-2

Valor Christian stays undefeated in conference play after defeating Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 9-6, and Mountain Vista (Colo.) 14-5. This week they face No. 5 Cherry Creek (Colo.) and Rock Canyon (Colo.). Previous: 2

3. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 13-3

Torrey Pines defeated archrival La Costa Canyon (Calif.) 12-8 behind 13 faceoff wins from sophomore Foster Huang and four goals from junior John Prior (Army). Senior Ryland Roach (UMass) had two goals and two assists while senior netminder Andrew Cook (Hopkins) had 14 saves. Poway (Calif.) and Carlsbad (Calif.) up next to close out the regular season. 4. Arapahoe (Colo.), 13-0

The Warriors added two more victories to stay undefeated overall and in league play. They dominated Cherokee Trail (Colo.) 19-8 and Denver South (Colo.) 9-4. Across both games, sophomore goalie Nicholas Pangborn had 23 saves while junior FOGO Alec Louder won 19 faceoffs. They close out the regular season against Evergreen (Colo.) and Mountain Vista (Colo.). Previous: 4

5. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 10-2

Cherry Creek defeated league opponent Kent Denver (Colo.) 6-5 in overtime led by senior middie Christopher Eiselein (NJIT) with four goals. Sophomore Chase Lawrence won 14 faceoffs and senior goalie Sam Kosloski (Canisius) had 13 saves. A trio of matches on deck, Valor Christian (Colo.), Cherokee Trail (Colo.) and Regis Jesuit (Colo.). Previous: 5

6. Brophy Prep (Ariz.), 19-2

The Broncos are No. 1 in the Arizona Lacrosse League as they head into playoffs this week. Previous: 6

7. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 13-5

Sacred Heart had a combined four goals scored against them last week and registered 48 goals. The Gators dominated Serra (Calif.) and Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) to cap off their regular season. Previous: 7

8. Marin Catholic (Calif.), 15-5

Marin Catholic closed out its regular season on a five-game winning streak after defeating San Marin (Calif.), 21-1, and Redwood (Calif.) 14-8. Playoffs are up next. Previous: 8

9. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 9-1

Backed by a strong defense, the Crusaders collected two more victories after defeating two of Washington’s top teams. Jesuit Portland beat O’Dea (Wash.) 13-4 and Skyline (Wash.) 17-4. Senior goalie Brady Smith (Hobart) had 21 saves over both games and only allowed five goals. Beaverton (Ore.) and Mountainside (Ore.) are up next. Previous: 9

10. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 17-2

The Tartans, on an eight-game hot streak, grab a top 10 spot after securing victories over Palos Verdes (Calif.) and Westlake (Calif.). St. Margaret’s begins its postseason trek this week. Previous: 10
